How many dollars worth of groceries can Fort Belvoir Commissary shoppers buy in a month? Troy Collins, store director, is shooting for $9 million - an all-time commissary record.
According to Collins, all indications are the commissary can sell more than $9 million worth of groceries in December - something that's never been done in commissary history.
"The shopper who puts us over the $9 million mark will get a $500 shopping spree, donated by one of (the Defense Commissary Agency's) industry partners, to mark the accomplishment," Collins said.
Last December, the commissary hit $8.7 million in sales, just $300,000 off this month's goal. Collins said the commissary staff is energized about the goal, and employees and vendors are putting out extra effort to keep shelves well-stocked every day throughout the month.
"We appreciate our customers and we're going all out for the record. Our annual sales for fiscal 2007 hit $95 million, which is the record, so now we're after the monthly sales record," he said.
Fort Belvoir leads all of DeCA's 258 commissaries in sales. Commissary shoppers save an average of 30 percent or more on their purchases compared to commercial prices - savings worth more than $3,000 for a family of four, Collins said.
