Fort Belvoir Installation Commander Col. Brian W. Lauritzen and German Armed Forces Command United States Chief of Staff Col. Heinz J. Altmeyer tap into the keg to officially open Oktoberfest at Fremont Parade Field Friday.
Celebration brings good cheer to Belvoir, local communities.
With the words "Ein Prosit," Fort Belvoir's 12th annual Oktoberfest officially opened Friday on Fremont Field.
Traditional German music and the smell of sauerkraut and sausage filled the air as Installation Commander Col. Brian W. Lauritzen and Chief of Staff of the German Armed Forces to Canada and America, Col. Heinz J. Altmeyer, performed the ceremonial keg tapping and reminisced about the three years that they have celebrated the event. This year's festival marked a 42-year relationship between the German Armed Forces and the U.S. Army.
The three-day festival, full of games, crafts, carnival rides, bands and costumed dancers provided Gemueltlichkeit (good cheer) and smiles for Fort Belvoir and the local communities, which came out to walk in the Volksmarches, to polka and even to chicken dance.
