New life given to road grader - with a big savings to boot

The Directorate of Logistics met and conquered a most daunting challenge recently, when members of its heavy mobile maintenance branch restored a road grader used at Davison Army Airfield for an estimated $62,000 - approximately half of what is was originally slated to cost.

According to maintenance supervisor Charles Spencer, the grader has been equipped with all-new cylinders, tires, a refurbished engine, new blades and a new paint job. Contributing to its new look was mechanic Tim Kollmer, who spent more than 200 hours over the course of six months on the project.

"It wasn't easy. It was completely rusted out and in need of immediate repairs," Kollmer said. "It took a little longer to finish only because we had to wait on certain parts, but things came together nicely in the end. With everything it has now, it's good to go for about another 15 years."

The road grader is primarily used to clear snow off the airstrips at Davison, Kollmer said.
