It's one of many successful programs at Fort Belvoir, but, with a deadline of Nov. 7 fast approaching, those looking to participate in this year's Operation Sugarplum will have to act quickly.
Designed to assist military families in financial need around the holidays, Operation Sugarplum has become a welcomed comfort for many in uniform.
Sharon Thomas, financial readiness program manager at Army Community Services, is proud of the program's track record and is hoping for another solid turnout again this year.
"We basically act as a matchmaker between the sponsors and recipients. We've had a lot of success in previous years and hope that continues, which I'm sure it will," she said. Community organizations, local businesses and individuals are all eligible to become sponsors and the families that participate will remain anonymous. Everyone wins with Operation Sugarplum."
There is an eligibility requirement of E-5 and below or GS-7 and below for families in the local area. Military recipients must be nominated by their units, while civilian recipients must be nominated by their directorates.
Recipient applications are available from company commanders, first sergeants, directors, chaplains and ACS staff. Anyone interested in adopting a family for the holiday season, or looking to receive financial assistance, can stop by 5820 21st St., Bldg. 210, ACS or call Sharon Thomas at 703-805-3699 for more information.
Distributions will be made Dec. 15 to 18.
