Trick or treat is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the housing areas. The Fort Belvoir Safety Office provides the following tips for a safe and memorable night.
"Costumes"
•Add reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility
•All children and their escorts should carry flashlights with fresh batteries
•Ensure costumes fit well to prevent tripping, limiting vision or contact with flame
"Treats"
•Tell children not to eat candy until you inspect it
•Sort and check treats
•Don't eat homemade items
•Discard candy with torn or unsealed wrappers
"Walking"
•A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children
•Children should stay in a group
•Only stop at houses that are well lit and have a porch light on
•Cover only one side of the street at a time
•Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk or the far edge of the roadway facing traffic
•Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat
"At Home"
•Remove tripping hazards from porches and front yards
•Restrain pets so they don't jump on or bite a trick-or-treater
•Keep the outside of the home well-lit
"Driving"
•Watch for children darting out from between parked cars
•Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs
•Watch for children in dark clothing
•Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
