Reluctant speaker?
Friday is the registration deadline to attend Tuesday's Speaker Training presented by Belvoir's public affair office. The training is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Barden Education Center. Reservations can be made through Pauline Hunter, 805-1250, e-mail Pauline.Elizabeth.Hunter@us.army.mil.

Ready Army classes set
Belvoir hosts Ready Army classes at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday. They are open to everyone. Printed information about Fort Belvoir's participation in the Ready Army campaign is available at Army Community Service, Barden Education Center, the commissary and the post exchange.
Ready Army activities for children, including a drawing contest, will be conducted throughout September at Fort Belvoir Elementary School, the Youth Center and at the child development centers.

Hispanic heritage dance
The Dewitt Army Community Hospital, Hispanic Heritage Committee sponsors a Hispanic heritage dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Fort Belvoir Community Club. The event features the Panamanian and Paraguay Folkloric Group.
Advance tickets costs $10 and are available by calling Alonso Grant, 703-805-0094; or Sgt. Angela Garcia, 703-805-0097.
Tickets will also be available at the door for $12.
Commanders, 1st Sgts. Training
A final list of participants for the JFHQ-NCR/MDW Commanders and First Sergeants Training Course is due Friday. Course dates are Monday through Wednesday at Fort Myer's Main Post Chapel, across from the main post exchange.
Military District of Washington Regulation requires all company commanders and first sergeants to attend the training.
Interested people should contact their unit S3 or installation DPTMS.

Military job fair
The Joint Employment Transition Services and the USO of Metropolitan Washington host a job fair Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Spates Community Club, 214 McNair Road, Fort Myer, Va.
Dozens of employers, including area police and fire departments, federal agencies, health care agencies, defense and government contractors, are expected to participate to discuss job openings with candidates. All military ID card holders can attend and should come with resumes and be prepared for on-site interviews. Children are not allowed.

Haunting volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed for Outdoor Recreation's upcoming haunted house. Volunteers can be characters or guides or help with construction.
People with any talent in construction, music and sound, costuming, decorating, acting, leading and organizing people or those who are just good screamers and like to creep around corners and scare people are needed.

Meetings are Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Construction begins Oct. 5 in the large indoor archery range, in Outdoor Recreation, Bldg. 778, at the corner of Warren and Johnson roads at Tompkins Basin.

Scouting volunteers needed
The Girl Scouts of Fort Belvoir need volunteers, female or male, parent and non-parent alike. Many varying positions are available,
including parent volunteers, troop leaders and co-leaders, service unit positions (of varying degree), event coordinators, etc.
Any help anyone can offer is appreciated. The Girl Scouts offers an opportunity to instill confidence, courage and character in the women leaders of the future.

AFTB Level II
Army Family Team Building Level II is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Oct. 3.

NARFE chapter meeting
Springfield Chapter 893 of NARFE, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, a non-profit organization, meets at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 8.
The group will present a legislative forum to acquaint people with the major party candidates for the House of Representatives in Virginia's 8th and 11th districts.
The meeting is at The American Legion Post 176, 5620 Amherst Ave., Springfield, adjacent to Kay Jenning's Springfield Toyota.

Melting Pot trip
Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers has a trip to the Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant, in Arlington Nov. 21.
The group departs the BOSS building at 7:15 p.m.
The trip costs $25 for single Soldiers and $45 for others, not including alcoholic beverages.
Payments must be received by Nov. 18 at the Community Center.

Fall Festival

Handel's Messiah
Each year, Fort Belvoir's choirs combine with community members to
form a Belvoir Community Choir. The group rehearses throughout November and then performs, with a professional orchestra and soloists, Part One, the Christmas Section, of Handel's Messiah.
This year, the performance is Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Belvoir Chapel. Music is provided. Rehearsals, in the chapel's basement, are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Nov. 4 to Dec. 2. A mandatory dress rehearsal is at 1 p.m. Dec. 6 at the chapel.

Free Market
The Protestant Women of the Chapel sponsor a Free Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at Woodlawn Chapel, across from the commissary. People with donations are asked to drop them off Oct. 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. All donations should be clean and in working condition.
The event is an ideal way to get rid of unwanted stuff before the holidays and help others out at the same time.
Men's conference
The Belvoir Men of Faith participate in a conference, a chance to learn, grow and be inspired and encouraged. The Iron Sharpens Iron 2008 Men's Conference is for men of all ages and is a daylong event Nov. 1 at the Christian Fellowship Church, Ashburn, Va.
Bill Perkins and Rick Rigsby are national keynote speakers. The event includes inspiring praise and worship music, 18 different seminars on a variety of topics relevant to men of all ages and stages; dozens of resources and exhibits to encourage and equip men for life and ministry; a shared experience of camaraderie and networking with men from around the region.
Lunch is included. All active-duty and men 13 to 22 years old are sponsored by the BMOF and Fort Belvoir Chapel. For others, there's a $20 donation.

Orthodox
Chaplain (Col.) Alexander F. C. Webster, an archpriest in the Orthodox Church in America, celebrates the second monthly Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Fairfax Chapel. The occasion is the Feast of the Protection of the Virgin Mary, which commemorates her protective intercession with her Son, when Constantinople, the Byzantine imperial capital, was attacked by a large pagan Slavic fleet.
All Eastern Orthodox Christian military and civilian personnel are encouraged to participate and others are welcome to observe.

Religious education
Catholic Religious Education begins Sunday for all age groups from 3 years to adult.
To provide all family members the opportunity for religious education, the following age groups are planned. The education runs from 10:45 a.m. to noon.
* Ages 3 and 4 to grade 1, Child Development Center Bldg. 1028.
* Grades 2, 3 and 4: Barden Education Center Bldg. 1017, with access from Langfitt Loop
* Grades 5, 6 and 7: Markham School Age Service Bldg. 950. From Belvoir Chapel, continue on Belvoir Road, left at Langfitt to the stop sign on Farrell Road, keep right at next stop sign, Hurley Road; and then cross Mount Vernon Road to Markham.
* Grades 8 thru 12, the Confirmation Class, Adult Education and Special Education are in the Religious Education Center, Bldg. 1028.
People new to the Fort Belvoir Community are asked to register with Sister Michael. "Blue" registration information requests are in the chapels and the REC. Families who were in the program will get registration information in the mail.

Macy's Day Parade
The Civilian Employee Fund invites Fort Belvoir civilians and up to five guests to go on a trip to New York to see the Macy's Day Parade and shop from Nov. 26 to 29, staying at The Helmsley.
The cost, per person, based on double occupancy, is $427. Children under age 12 is $30 for the bus fare, with free hotel. Full payment is due in September.
The bus departs from Sosa, Bldg. 200 at 7 a.m. promptly.

Chili cook-off
Army Community Service's Family Advocacy Program kicks off Domestic Violence Prevention Month with a Chili Cook-Off Oct. 10 at 11:30 a.m. at Barden Education Center.
Each chili will be judged by a committee and will also be offered to spectators who want a taste. Each chili batch will be judged on aroma, appearance, consistency and taste.
Chili rules will be sent out to interested participants. The event is free.

Fall Bridal Show

Racing, slots trip
The Civilian Employee Fund Committee has an overnight trip to Charles Town Races and Slots, Oct. 12 to 13. The bus leaves from the Sosa Building, 200 Belvoir Road, at 9 a.m. Oct. 12 and returns at 1 p.m. Oct. 13.
The trip costs $65 per person, based on double occupancy, and is open to Fort Belvoir DoD Civilian Employees with one adult guest each.
The trip includes bus transportation and a room at the New Inn at Charles Town.
Registrations are available until they sell out from the CEFC in the basement of Bldg. 210.

CYS in the villages

Army Community Service and the Soldier Family Assistance Center are relocating from Bldg. 210 to their new home at Sosa, Bldg. 200. The move is expected to begin Oct. 14, with limited services available for up to three days.

New York City trip
Fort Belvoir ITR is selling tickets for its traditional trip Dec. 13 to New York's Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes. The show is at 11:30 a.m. The bus departs Fort Belvoir Community Center early in the morning. The cost is $145 per person and includes bus transportation and show tickets. The 90-minute show features Santa, his reindeer, a 3-D trip through New York City and the high-kicking Rockettes!
This year's tour also includes a behind-the-scenes tour.

SKIES Unlimited instructors needed
The Child & Youth Services family needs child/youth instructors. The new Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration, & Skills are looking for qualified and caring instructors for its schools of arts, sports, academics and life skills.
Classes serve pre-school through high school seniors, in a variety of subjects and interests.

Webster University
Webster University is registering for Fall 2 through Oct. 3, for classes that begin Oct. 18.
The GRE/GMAT is not required for admissions. Programs offered at Belvoir include Master of Business Administration, Business & Organizational Security Management and Procurement & Acquisitions Management.
Evening classes are conducted at Barden.
Office hours are Mondays to Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

ODU
Old Dominion University has a Military Career Transition Program, which is a Master of Science in Education with initial licensure program. Active/retired military, military spouses and qualified civilians are eligible for the program.
Candidates must have completed a bachelor's program. The teaching license is good in 44 states and DoD schools around the world.
ODU has live classes at Barden Education Center in the evenings and some Saturdays; weekend teletechnet satellite courses at Quantico Marine Corps Base and online courses. Teaching licenses can be earned in elementary, middle school and high school academic areas. Students who are transferred before completing of their degree/licensure can complete their program via video streaming or online.
ODU is affiliated with the Troops to Teachers and Spouses to Teachers national programs. Personnel can begin the masters program immediately as non degree students and be accepted into the program during the first semester.

U of Maryland University College
Registration is open for The University of Maryland University College's fall semester, with regular evening classes starting Oct. 23.
UMUC also has three upper level 1 credit Saturday classes, when students attend two Saturdays, with class start dates of Oct. 4 and 18 and Nov. 1.
Online sessions start Oct 5.
UMUC is in Barden Education Center, Bldg. 1017, Room 128. Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to noon.

NOVA
Northern Virginia Community College offers degree and certificate programs and is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges program. NOVA has guaranteed admission agreements with more than 40, four-year schools. NOVA offers hybrid classes on post and online, free tutoring and on-post placement testing.
