Help a veteran
The Honor Flight Network is looking for volunteers to escort World War II veterans from Nebraska as they tour the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., April 23 and 24. Operation Airlift will execute two flights to transport World War II veterans from Nebraska to D.C., and the program needs 30 volunteers each day to serve as escorts for the veterans as they tour the memorial.
The Honor Flight program recognizes that time is of the essence in providing this service to World War II veterans, as the nation loses these heroes at a rate of 1,000 per day.
Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for their sacrifices. The program transports the nation's heroes to Washington, D.C., to visit and reflect at their memorials.

Army Warrant Officers
The Lord Fairfax Silver Chapter, US Army Warrant Officer Association, has its monthly membership meeting today at 5 p.m. The meeting location is Kingstowne Library, at the corner of Beulah and Telegraph roads.
All active, reserve and retired warrant officers are invited and encouraged to attend.

Yard sale throughout housing
The Villages at Belvoir have a post-wide yard sale, throughout all of its 15 villages, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Residents with questions may contact their community management office.
All residents can sell. The event is open to everyone.

Yard sale
Parents from the North Post Child Development Center will use the facility's parking lot to participate in the Post-Wide Yard Sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The NPCDC is across the street from the Belvoir Elementary School and next to Lewis Village Housing area, 5925 Meeres Road, Bldg. 1745.

Administrative Professionals' Day
The Officers' Club hosts Administrative Professionals' Day Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a chance for people to show their appreciation for that person who makes their jobs easier.
The event includes a buffet brunch for $15 per person. The event is open to all and is in the Mount Vernon Room.

Home-ownership workshop
Thinking of buying a home? The Virginia Housing Development Authority and Army Community Service have a Home Ownership Education workshop Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. Topics include budgeting, credit, the loan process (qualifying and lower rate programs), home inspections, the loan closing process and closing documents.
The seminar is the ACS Classroom of Bldg 200. Registration is available through Army Community Service, 703-805-4590.

Earth Day events
Wednesday is Earth Day.
The Environmental and Natural Resources Division of the Fort Belvoir Directorate of Public Works, along with FMWR, jointly host an Earth Day event from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Tompkins Basin area at Castle Park.
There will be a raptor bird show from 10 to 11 a.m. and a variety of educational opportunities throughout the day. Some food will be provided.
An Earth Day after-school environmental workshop, hosted by Pinnacle, is at Fairfax Village Neighborhood Center from 4 to 7 p.m. People can come and learn more about local species of plants and wildlife or take a tour of the eco-friendly building and butterfly garden. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Thank a volunteer
This year, National Volunteer Week is Sunday to April 25. The observance is about taking action and encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change, discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to foster positive transformation.
Fort Belvoir volunteers lead by example by encouraging the people they help and motivating others to serve.
Belvoir's Volunteer Appreciation Recognition luncheon is April 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Officers' Club.

International spouses
The International Spouse Group meets April 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Vernondale Village Community Center, 9532 Troth Way.
The group has information on Army Community Service programs, English as a Second Language, citizenship, jobs, the Metro and more.

Learn the Metro
The International Spouse Group has a Metro Field Trip May 1 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to the Brewmaster's Castle (Christian Heurich House Museum), in Washington, D.C.

Annual cleanup
Belvoir participates in the Annual Route 1 Cleanup April 25.
Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Volunteers can sign in and get reflective vests, trash bags and assignment.
Volunteers should dress in appropriate civilian attire, including comfortable shoes and gloves.
Refreshments provided after registration. The cleanup is from 8 a.m. to noon.
Volunteers should gather in the Community Center parking lot.

Constructive conflict resolution
Fort Belvoir's Civilian Personnel Advisory Center and Vicore, Inc. present a course, Constructive Conflict Resolution, May 12 and 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Bldg. 320.
The ability to cope successfully with conflict is among the most important interpersonal skills.
The workshop is designed to help participants develop a wide range of approaches to resolving conflict. Participants will determine their usual style for handling conflict, which is tied to many factors: family culture, personality, experience, gender and job requirements. Through exercises, lectures, group discussion and exercises, videos and case studies and role-playing, participants will learn many methods of resolving conflict.
The course costs $235 per participant.
People who want to attend should submit an SF 182 to Fort Belvoir CPAC, 5800 Putnam Road, Fort Belvoir, Va., 22060-5821 at least 14 work days before the class starts.

FERS pre-retirement course
Fort Belvoir's Civilian Personnel Advisory Center and Planning Inc. present a FERS Pre-Retirement seminar May 27 to 29, for $264.
Topics include eligibility, benefits computation, survivor and disability benefits, supplemental benefits, FEHB/FEBLI, Social Security, Medicare; financial planning, including TSP; health and wellness, including nutrition, fitness and stress management; tax and estate planning; and life after retirement.

Blood drive reservations
In celebration of 2009 National Medical Laboratory Professional's Week, DeWitt Army Community Hospital's Department of Pathology and The Armed Forces Blood Program have a blood drive at DeWitt April 24 from 8 a.m. to noon in the main conference room.
The goal for the drive is 80 units.
All donors may complete an electronic sign-up form to reserve a 15-minute donation time slot to reduce wait time at militarylifeforce.com; my profile; create a new profile, using Belvoir's ZIP code, 22060 and the blood drive's date.
Drop-ins are also welcome.

Partial closure of 9th Street
One lane of 9th Street will be closed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. through May 29 to allow Dominion Virginia Power crews to install an electrical direct bank system, according to the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. Road signs and flagmen will warn motorists when work is occurring.

Day-tripping
MWR has trips to Atlantic City, N.J., April 25 and May 30.
The trips, open to all ages, depart the Community Center at 8 a.m. and return between 10:30 and 11 p.m. The cost is $45 per person, with an $18 to $25 rebate. Sign up at the center, Bldg. 1200, Taylor Road.

Parent University is April 30. It is a free event open to parents.

Outdoor Recreation joins with Environmental to explore a part of the Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge on a Sunday each month. The next scheduled outing is April 26, woodcock and wild turkey round up, 5 a.m.

Sailing socials
Want to learn how to sail in a social and fun environment? Outdoor Recreation has learn-to-sail with a with a group instructor in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Sail from 5:30 p.m. until sunset.
No sailing experience is necessary and each boat has one instructor onboard. People can participate and sail as much, or as little, as they want.
Boats can accommodate up to five guests and an instructor.
The cost of $42 per person includes sailing until sunset, onboard instruction and transportation. Upcoming dates are Friday and May 15, from 3 to 10 p.m.

Bunco!
Anyone 18 and older is welcome to join the fun of the Army MWR promotion, "It's Bunco Time."
The dice game is easy to learn and play and beginners are welcome. Prizes include gift cards and prizes.
Dates at Belvoir are: Wednesday, Gourmet Night; and May 27, Entertainment Night.
Games begin at 5 p.m. at the Community Center and food and drinks will be available to buy.

Logistics workshop, conference
AMC's Logistics Support Activity and the Council of Logistics Engineering Professionals have a 2009 Life Cycle Logistics Tools Workshop and User's Group Conference and Seminar, May 12 to 14.
The workshop, at the Holiday Inn, downtown Huntsville, Ala., is expected to draw more than 200 logistics professionals.

SHAPE Officers Association
Active-duty, retired officers or civilian equivalents who served at SHAPE, its subordinate commands or NATO, are invited to join the SHAPE Officers Association. The U.S. Chapter of SOA hosts luncheons and guest speakers in the D.C. area, golf outings and an annual formal dinner.
Members include some who served when SHAPE was in Paris, before its current location, Belgium.

Monthly family readiness classes
The Mobilization/ Deployment and Family Readiness Program holds monthly classes as follows:
First Thursday, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Family Readiness Group Roundtable for all FRG leaders, unit commanders and first sergeants and FRG volunteers.
Second Monday, 10 a.m. to noon, Pre-Deployment Class, preparing for upcoming deployments and learning resources for Soldiers, DoD civilians and family members.
Third Monday, 10 a.m. to noon, Reintegration Workshop, preparing for return or adjusting as a family after the return, what to expect and resources to help, for Soldiers, DoD civilians and family members.
May 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., FRG Advanced Class, FRG volunteers or unit commands needing more in-depth information on sustaining, and/or revitalizing an FRG.

AFTB instructor training
Have you taken at least two Army Family Team Building classes? Interested in instructing others? AFTB Instructor Training classes are Tuesday to April 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Classes are in Bldg. 200, 9800 Belvoir Road. Free childcare will be provided. All children must be registered with Child, Youth and School Services before the class. The childcare registration deadline is Friday.

Motorcycle safety courses
A motorcycle safety course is May 1 and 2 in the Pentagon North Parking Lot.

Gospel spring revival
Woodlawn Chapel Gospel Service has its Spring Revival from Wednesday to April 24. F. Bruce Williams, senior pastor of Bates Memorial Baptist Church, Louisville, Ky., is guest speaker.

PWOC rally hostesses
Belvoir's Protestant Women of the Chapel host the PWOC Northeast Region Spring Rally, "Connecting the Corridor," Saturday at Woodlawn Chapel. The event is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Registration is $15, which includes meals. Women should bring their Bibles and wear comfortable clothes.
In addition to protestant women representing all services in the Military District of Washington, the rally includes PWOC members from Brunswick Naval Air Station, Maine; West Point and forts Drum and Hamilton, N.Y.; Hanscom AFB, Mass.; Picatinny Arsenal and McGuire AFB, N.J.; Carlisle Barracks, Pa.; Dover AFB; Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio; forts Lee, Eustis and Monroe, Va.; Langley AFB, Va.; and Little Creek Naval Air Base, Va.

Orthodox Divine Liturgy
An Orthodox Divine Liturgy, celebrating St. James the Apostle, Son of Zebedee, is at 9 a.m. April 30 in Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Woodlawn Chapel, celebrated by Chaplain Col. Alexander F.C.Webster, an Orthodox priest.

Jewish
Fort Belvoir Jewish Congregation has a community-wide Yom HaShoah program Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Temple Rodef Shalom. A program on Belvoir is April 24.
The congregation and Master Sgt. Ernest Murray of the Equal Opportunity Office are working on a program commemorating the Holocaust.
Saturday Service is at 9:30 a.m. April 25, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Children's Service, in Belvoir Chapel.
A Jewish Welfare Board Program is April 28. The Jewish Welfare Board, the Jewish Chaplains Endorser, will have a program at the Religious Education Center.
The congregation has weekly Friday night services at 8 p.m. at Belvoir Chapel.
The congregation is looking for all Jewish Soldiers and families new to Belvoir.

Fairfax Chapel closed
Fairfax Chapel is closed until further notice for renovations and repair. The 9:15 Hispanic and the 11:15 Masses will temporarily be celebrated in Barden Education Center Auditorium.

Education
Old Dominion University
The Military Career Transition Program's Master of Science in Education summer classes begin May 11. The second summer session begins June 19. Non-degree
applications are being accepted now for summer and fall classes. Non-degree students become degree-seeking after beginning the program.
The Master of Science in Education is an initial licensure program that transfers to 44 states and DoD schools around the world. Licensure is offered in elementary, middle school and high school. Active/retired military, military spouses and qualified civilians are eligible for the program. The ODU program adviser can evaluate transcripts to determine what subjects the student could qualify to teach.
Personnel who transfer before completing the program locally can finish their program by taking online or video streamed courses.

Spouses' careers date change

The DoD is implementing the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account Program beginning in May to provide resources and assistance to spouses of active-duty servicemembers, Guard and Reserve with a spouse on orders for a year. This centralized, virtual program, accessed through Military OneSource, will provide counseling and funding up to $6,000 to help spouses get licenses, certificates or education opportunities leading to employment.
Interested spouses can call the Military OneSource Center, 1-800-342-9647, and speak with a career and education consultant. The consultant will help the spouse choose a career goal and enter a career plan into an online system, "My Career Advancement Account."
Upon approval of the spouse's career plan for education, training, certification or licensure, DoD will provide direct payment to the payee (school, institution, or program) through the designated government portal. The spouse will report back to Military OneSource upon completion of the plan and receipt of employment.
