A flurry of action catches your eye, and, as you watch, you realize how the ritualized training of each step and thrust of fists are intended. Each complex action has a defined particular purpose. It is the purpose of defending oneself in a calm and disciplined manner.
Taekwondo is a martial art with 5000 year-old origins in Korea. Characterized by unity of body and mind, it also promotes order and self-control. It demands precise movement and an unwavering spirit.
It also builds self-confidence and inner discipline according to Taekwondo Master Charity Beyer, one of two instructors who works on post and has taught classes for nine years. "Taekwondo encourages the children to stay focused, stay motivated and never give up. I enjoy watching the children progress in all skill levels,
watch them grow and learn, gain confidence and most of all, enjoy the process," Beyer said.
Beyer teaches the Saturday course with Taekwondo Master Richard Wilkins at the Youth Services Center at advanced and intermediate levels for the SKIES
program.
