Army warrant officers
The Lord Fairfax Silver Chapter, US Army Warrant Officer Association has its monthly membership meeting today at the Kingstowne Library on the corner of Beulah and Telegraph roads. The meeting begins at 5 p.m.
All active, reserve, and retired warrant officers are invited and encouraged to attend.

Job Shadow Day volunteers needed
Soldiers and civilians are asked to host local students on Feb. 5 for Belvoir's participation in the nationwide program, Job Shadow Day.
Students will visit the installation for a school day and shadow an employee for at least four hours to observe and participate in workplace activities.
Belvoir employees who are willing to volunteer to be shadowed for the day - military and civilian of all ranks and grades - are needed. Volunteers must be committed to taking some time to explain his or her role to students.
Many professionals in a variety of fields are needed.

Mail Handler's Training
Mail Handler's Training is at 8 a.m. Jan. 27 in Room 103 of Barden Education Center.
The training is designed for Fort Belvoir personnel who are involved with official mail duties.

Surveyor Road closed
For crew and equipment necessary for stream restoration, Surveyor Road is closed. Officials recommend drivers who normally turn right onto the road from Belvoir to Mount Vernon Road, near Colyer Village, use the road by the Community Center.

Arts and crafts classes
Kawamura Arts and Crafts has ongoing framing, stained glass and jewelry-making classes through winter. Seven weekly stained glass classes begin Feb. 5 and April 12 for $100 plus supplies.
Jewelry classes include basics, stained-glass pendant, wire basics and chunky bracelet and are conducted Saturday mornings for $35 each plus $15 for supplies.

Framing classes
The Fort Belvoir Self-Help Frame Shop in Kawamura offers four-session Beginning Framing Classes for $60, plus materials.

Love on the Potomac
The Officers' Club celebrates Valentine's Day from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 14, with a gourmet meal, glass of wine, entertainment and dancing.
The event costs $60 per couple, by reservation only, which are available by calling 703-780-0930, ext. 600.

Bridal Fair
MWR's annual bridal fair is Feb. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Officers' Club. More than 50 vendors will present brides- and grooms-to-be and families ideas to help with wedding planning.
Vendor items include DJs, linens, cakes, bands, photographers, videographers, jewelry, makeup, gowns, tuxedos, travel and more.

Seafood buffet
Fort Belvoir Officers' Club hosts a seafood buffet from 6 to 9 p.m. every Friday, which includes crab legs, shrimp, mussels, beef, chicken, salad bar, desserts and more, along with live entertainment. Financial Roadshow
Fort Belvoir's Army Community Service hosts a Financial Readiness Roadshow Jan. 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Officer's Club.
The show is aimed at helping servicemembers and DoD cardholders and their families by strengthening their financial circumstances and teaching important ways for them to take control of their finances.
Some of the topics that will be covered include identity theft, credit reports; managing debt and saving smart.
Attendees can also consult with personal financial counselors in free, private face-to-face sessions.
Pre-registration is required and the event is limited to 400 people. Child care will be available for the first 150 registrants.

Newcomer's orientation
The next newcomer's orientation is Feb. 2 at Barden Education Center Auditorium. People who attend can learn about Belvoir and what resources and events are available in the community and meet the installation command staff and key directorates among the installation. New spouse orientation
Are you a new spouse living at Fort Belvoir or the surrounding area? Would you like to meet other spouses, learn about your community and get information about resources available to spouses?

DFAC closed to civilians, retirees
Through Jan. 23, civilians and retirees are not permitted to eat at the Dining Facility due to support of Inaugural activities. The normal Monday and Friday lunch schedule is expected to resume Jan. 26.

International spouses
The International Spouse Group has an informational meeting Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. in Vernondale Village Community Center, 9532 Troth Way.
The group is ideal for foreign-born spouses who want to meet other spouses.
Spouses who attend are asked to bring a favorite dish from their home country to share.

Upcoming field trips and events of the Fort Belvoir Home Educators are: Jan. 27, Fort Belvoir Credit Union; Jan. 29, spelling bee; Feb. 10, Valentine party; and Feb. 26, science fair.
FBHE also has a Daisy and Brownie Girl Scout Troop which meets every other Wednesday morning.
Registration for FBHE Co-op Session Three starts today and ends Feb. 19. The co-op is at Markham Center, South Post.
FBHE is a group of military and DoD families dedicated to the home education of their children from preschool through high school. It is also a support group and conducts activities that enrich the lives of members' families.
Monthly events include bowling, rollerskating, teen's night out and mom's night out.

Family night
Fort Belvoir Elementary School PTO hosts family night Jan. 22 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The event is a sock hop with oldies music and popular songs by children's favorite groups.
The free event is open to all Belvoir families.
People in costume or everyday clothes are welcome.
Connect with Belvoir's nature, wildlife
Beginning in January, the third Sunday of each month, Outdoor Recreation joins with Environmental to explore a part of the Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge, with each hike focusing on an environmental lesson.
The wildlife refuge, established in 1980, includes more than 1,315 acres of marsh and hardwood forest in the post's southwestern corner. Plans are to explore and experience the nine miles of public trails that wind through the refuge during the winter and early spring.
Dates are: Sunday, Feb. 22, March 15 and April 19 and starts at 8 a.m. each time.

Bird-watching group
Fort Belvoir Outdoor Recreation has a bird watching interest group for people interested in observing or learning to identify different birds.
The group will travel to observe and identify wild birds of Virginia and Maryland in their natural habitat.

Shrek on Broadway
Fort Belvoir ITR has a New York City Broadway show trip to see Shrek The Musical May 16.
The bus departs Fort Belvoir Community Center at 5:30 a.m., for the show which begins at 2 p.m. The cost of $145 per person includes bus transportation and premium seating tickets. The trip is canceled if tickets are not sold by Jan. 31.

AFAP training, symposium
Training for the annual Army Family Action Plan is March 9, with an alternate date of March 10.
Belvoir's AFAP Symposium is March 12 and 13. The AFAP and the symposium is an Army-wide program that enables all members to raise issues of concern, make recommendations to improve quality of life and to ensure the standard of living keeps up with the changing times, on a global level.

Army Community Service's Employment Readiness Program offers several workshops and training for potential employees. Class registration and information is available by calling 703-805-4590.
Federal Resume Preparation is today from 10 a.m. to noon.
Respite Care Provider Training, where people receive training to care for exceptional family members and possibly earn $15 to $30 per hour. Orientation and Part 1 Training is Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Employment Program Orientations, an overview of local employment, including federal jobs, resume assistance, registration for job skill training classes, are Tuesdays from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays at ACS. Registration is required.
ACS Career Training Academy, with courses in computer skills, administrative assistant field, medical terminology and medical office specialist field are offered at ACS in January. Registration is open for a limited number of spaces and is available by calling 703-805-3126.

Adult Confirmation
Catholic adults who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation may register for an Adult Confirmation Class. Classes are Sundays in February from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Religious Education Center.

Protestant Confirmation
Protestant confirmation classes start Sunday and continue Sundays through March at 9:20 a.m. in the Religious Education Center. The class is for Protestant children, seventh grade or older, who were baptized as children or want to be baptized. Parent approval is required to attend.

Men's Bible Studies

Barden Education Center

NOVA
Northern Virginia Community College is closed Tuesday for Inauguration Day, with all classes canceled. This is a change from the published spring semester schedule and in addition to an already-published closure Monday for Martin Luther King Junior Day.
Students can log on to nvcc.edu or call 703-323-3770 to register for the spring semester if the college is closed.
The next session begins March 16.

UMUC
University of Maryland University College is registering for spring classes. Face-to-face classes start Jan. 26 and March 23.

ODU
Old Dominion University's Military Career Transition Program is designed for active/retired military, military spouses and qualified government personnel wanting to teach elementary, middle or high school.
The teaching license is good in 44 states and DoD schools around the world.
