Hoping Murphy won't show up at the ball

»  Comments | Post a Comment

How can I tell Murphy and his law to take a hike? No, really, I'd appreciate any advice.

A very good friend of mine is a combat medic over at Walter Reed. He received two tickets to the Commander-in-Chief's Inaugural Ball. He needed a date and I was so excited I jumped at the opportunity. Then reality began to set in.

President-elect Obama is planning an inaugural ball exclusively for members of the military. Organizers said the ball will honor the country's active-duty and Reserve servicemembers, and invited guests will include Purple Heart recipients and other wounded warriors, families of fallen heroes, and spouses of deployed military. Obama is
continuing the tradition Bush started in 2005.

Where does Murphy fit into this you ask? Murphy 's Law states if anything can go wrong, it will. It also states, if there's more than one possible outcome of a job or task, and one of those outcomes will result in disaster or an undesirable consequence, then somebody will do it that way.

I'm not worried about my dress being the same as anyone else's. There are at least 10 other inaugural balls going on; chances are someone will have my dress. I won't be offended. In fact I may go up to the other girl and tell her what excellent taste we both have. The girl who got the cheapest dress would win of course.
What I am worried about is tripping or spilling something, or my dress ripping as the entire room is silent.

The event will be at the National Building Museum in Washington. I recently read the Presidential Inauguration Committee is working to have the bash broadcast around the world.

Great! It isn't enough to potentially embarrass myself in front of a room of people I have the utmost respect and gratitude for; but, now I have the potential to embarrass myself in front of a nation, or even the world.

Dear Murphy, if you promise not to show up on Tuesday night, I promise you can throw an extra PCS gremlin or two in the works during my next move. Please don't let me wake up on Wednesday morning thinking I had a bad dream suddenly to be pulled back into reality by my embarrassing moment being played over and over and over on the major news networks.
