Mail Handlers' Training

Volunteers wanted
Fort Belvoir's Community Relations needs bilingual, medical and community volunteers to help with free school physicals for children without health insurance.
The event is from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 8 at South County Government Center, 2nd Floor, 8350 Richmond Highway. Volunteers need to be at orientation, which starts at 7 a.m.
Sponsors will provide coffee, cold drinks and pastries. They are Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce; Inova Mount Vernon Hospital; Fairfax County Health Department and Inova Partnership for Healthy Kids.

Free, outdoor concert
The U.S. Army Band Downrange has a concert from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the quad at the Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton, Va., 22079.
The band does pop/variety and its music includes current, R&B, country, patriotic and original music.
People who attend are welcome to bring blankets and chairs.

AFTB Level I
Fort Belvoir's Army Family Team Building has a Level I AFTB class, Navigating the Military, Aug. 11 to 13. This FREE class will be conducted at 9800 Belvoir Road, Bldg. 200.

Newcomer's Orientation
The next Newcomer's Orientation is Aug. 3 in Barden Education Center Auditorium. People can learn about Fort Belvoir, resources and events available and meet the installation command staff and key directorates. Childcare is provided with advance registration.

Spouse orientation
All spouses new to Fort Belvoir and the surrounding areas are invited to attend the New Spouse Orientation, Spouse Meet & Greet, from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 5 in Fairfax Village Community Center.
People who attend can get information about Belvoir, the National Capital Region, how to use the Metro, adult education, child care/school information and more. The meetings are ideal to meet other area spouses.

Hearts Apart
Hearts Apart is for all spouses, male and female, whose sponsor is deployed, geographically separated, on an unaccompanied tour or extended TDY.
Army Community Service provides a supportive group setting for activities, resources, and to network with one another during their sponsor's absence. Free on-site childcare and dinner is provided.
The next group meetings are from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 20 and Sept. 18 at ACS, Bldg. 200, Belvoir Road.

Deployment and family readiness
The Mobilization/ Deployment and Family Readiness Program conducts monthly classes as follows:
Aug. 6, 10:30 a.m. to noon, FRG roundtable, for all FRG leaders, unit commanders, first sergeants and FRG volunteers. This month's topics are American Red Cross and Outdoor Recreation's Warrior Adventure Quest.
Aug. 10, 10 a.m. to noon, Pre-Deployment Workshop - Preparing for an upcoming deployment and learning about resources for Soldiers, DoD civilians and family members, including before, during and after deployment.
Aug. 11, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Family Readiness Fair - Approximately 30 agencies are invited to Army Community Service to provide information tables for the fair. Visitors will learn about ACS' programs, Soldier and Family Assistance Center, and the Fort Belvoir community.
Outdoor Recreation will also set up its inflatable paint ball field for attendees to use and will also have a table to educate families about the Warrior Adventure Quest.
Aug. 11, 1 to 2:30 p.m., CARE Team Orientation introduces the Fort Belvoir CARE Team Program to units and families. Interested volunteers may apply to join the CARE Team. A CARE Team is a CAsualty REsponse group of volunteers who have been trained by the Mobilization, Deployment and Family Readiness Office to help Soldiers and families during crisis, when activated by the installation. A panel will meet to review the applications, interview and select volunteers to attend the CARE Team Training on Sept. 10.
All workshops and meetings listed above are in the ACS Classroom, Bldg. 200, Belvoir Road.

Job fair
A job fair at Fort Lee is Aug. 21 for transitioning military, military spouses and veterans with valid military ID cards, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lee Club, 1100 Lee Avenue, Fort Lee, Va., 23801.
Pre-registration is available through civilianjobs.com. To be matched with a potential employer, based on career and geographical preferences, interested people must register at least 14 days before the event.

Canoe, kayak rental
Outdoor Recreation now has new canoes and kayaks for rent.
Half-day, full-day and weekend rentals are available for canoes and single and tandem kayaks,
Rental fees include life preserver and car-top carrier, if needed. Also, ODR has a specific boat launching site on Tompkins Basin near ODR, Bldg. 778.

Spirit of America tickets
The U.S. Army's Spirit of America Show is Sept. 11 and 12 at the Patriot Center. Performances are free, but people who attend must have tickets, which are available at the Community Center.

New pavilions to rent
Outdoor Recreation has two new pavilions, the Eagle and the Osprey, for rent at Tompkins Basin on the Potomac River. The introductory fee is $25 each per day, with a $50 refundable cleaning deposit.
Each 20-by-30-feet pavilion has picnic tables, a barbecue grill and volleyball nets. Volleyballs and other recreational items are available for rent at the Outdoor Recreation Center, Bldg 778.

Crab feast
Outdoor Recreation has a trip to the Annapolis Rotary Crab Feast, Aug. 7 from 3 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets, $65, include transportation and all-you-can-eat blue crab and all-you-can-drink soda and beer.

Book-signing
Fort Belvoir Jewish Congregation hosts a book & author event at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 2 in the Religious Education Center. Alison Buckholtz will discuss her book she wrote, "Standing By: The Making of An American Family in the Time of War."

Pianist wanted
The Fort Belvoir's Garrison Chaplain Office is looking for a pianist for the 8 a.m. Protestant worship service.

Catholic
Fairfax Chapel is closed until further notice for renovations and repair. The 9:15 a.m. Hispanic and the 11:15 Masses will be held at the Barden Education Center Auditorium.
Jewish
Fort Belvoir Jewish Congregation holds services Friday evenings at 8 p.m. at Belvoir Chapel and one early service a month at 7:30 p.m. This month's early service is Friday.
A Saturday service is this weekend at 9:30 a.m.
A Tisha B'Av Service is Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in Belvoir Chapel. Lights will be low and the group will read from the Book of Lamentations.

VBS set
Vacation Bible School is Aug. 16 to 20 in the Religious Education Center. This year's theme is Rome - Paul and the Underground Church.

Barden Education Center
Central Michigan University
Registration for fall classes at Central Michigan University is open through Friday, for classes that begin Aug. 21 at Barden. Classes are available at six locations in the D.C metro area including at Fort Belvoir.
CMU offers a master of science in administration degree.
CMU accepts applications year round, with new classes beginning every six weeks. Classes meet on alternating weekends or weekday evenings. Degree completion is available in 18 months.

NoVA for high-schoolers
High school and home-schooled students who are at least 16 years old may be eligible to start earning college credits at Northern Virginia Community College. Interested students should contact the Student Services Center at the nearest campus - Alexandria, Annandale, Loudoun, Manassas, Springfield and Woodbridge.
Students may apply and register 24 hours a day at www.nvcc.edu.

Park University summer Internet classes and registration for Fall 1 are under way. Onsite classes begin Aug. 10, with a registration deadline of Aug. 7; and Internet classes begin Aug. 17, with a registration deadline of Aug. 14.

ODU
Non-degree applications are being accepted now for summer and fall classes at Old Dominion University.
ODU offers a master of science in education for active and retired Soldiers, military spouses and qualified civilians; and teaching licenses in elementary, middle and high school academic areas of math, English, social studies, and science.
Courses are conducted at Barden and online.

UMUC
University of Maryland University College is accepting registration for its fall term, session I and II, with business, finance, homeland security, psychology and history classes.
Session I is Sept. 8 to Oct. 26. Session II is Oct. 27 to Dec. 17.
UMUC is in Barden Education Center, Rooms 126 and 128.

Webster University
Registration at Webster University is open for fall classes, which begin Aug. 15. The GRE/GMAT is not required for admissions.
Evening classes are conducted at Barden Education Center and additional programs are offered in the D.C. Metro area at Bolling and Andrews air force bases, and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
Webster University offers five, nine-week terms each year, with some transferable credits.
Office hours until Aug. 15 are Mondays to Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Fridays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Afterward, new hours are Mondays to Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
