Shopping at Belvoir's Thrift Shop is open to everyone who has access to the post - all are welcome. Consignments, however, are limited to military ID card holders only. People with the ID cards can open a consignment account to sell their unwanted items and make some extra money.
The shop is at the corner of Caples Road and 21st Street, one block east of the Vet Clinic. The thrift shop has a large inventory of clothing, books, household goods and furniture.
The facility is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and the first and third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Consignments are taken from 9 to 11 a.m., or until the store has reached capacity, whichever comes first.
Donations to the thrift shop are always welcome, except for computers or computer accessories, mattresses, box springs, and any broken or dirty item.
Belvoir Thrift Shop was able to give $10,000 in grants in November, which thrift shop representatives are very proud of, especially that it's been open in its new location for less than a year
and building upgrades were completed privately. The shop gave $2,000 grants to Army Community Service Deployment Readiness Program; Child, Youth and School Services; Boy Scouts; Cub Scouts and the Gold Star Wives Potomac Chapter.
In addition, $5,000 will be awarded in scholarships this spring in the form of five $1,000 awards. Three will go to graduating seniors and one to an undergraduate student based on their academic achievements and community service; and one will go to a military spuse, based on community involvement.
Belvoir's Thrift Shop needs everyone's support. In the 10 years the shop has been in Building 238, the shop has given the post community more than $4 million in the form of consignment checks, wages, scholarships and grants.
With the community's help, Belvoir Thrift Shop serves those who serve our country.
