Asian Pacific Islander Heritage
The Military Intelligence Readiness Command and 55th Sustainment Brigade present an outdoor luau, in observance of Asian Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. The event is Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mosby Reserve Center. It includes live educational dances, singing, cultural food samples, displays and giveaways.
Saturday volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed to help Fort Belvoir Elementary School students and the Woodlawn United Methodist Church Youth Group with a cemetery clean-up Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The cemetery is next to Woodlawn Chapel.
The youth took on the beautification project to demonstrate good citizenship and respect for fallen military members and prepare the location for Memorial Day.
Interested volunteers are asked to show up at 8 a.m. at the cemetery, wear appropriate clothing, bring rakes, clippers, movers, hedgers etc.

AAFES event, car show
AAFES' Safety Day & Car Show is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Belvoir's Main Store Parking Lot.
The event includes a bike and car show with trophies and prizes with free admission and vehicle registration. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for 12 categories and best in show. Categories include: cars before 1960; after 1960; Volkswagens; touring and sport trucks and motorcycles; best interior; engine and paint; and longest distance driven.
Activities sponsored by AAFES Safety Council and Loss Prevention include Sparky the Fire Dog; games and prizes; a fire truck and military police; a moon bounce; face-painting; Game Stop, where participants can show their skills for prizes on X-Box, Guitar Hero, Wii: Super Mario Bros, PS3 Street Fighters; and D.J. L.E.O.
Games include putt-putt golf, balloon toss, basketball, and a bike rodeo for kids ages 5 to 10 who bring their bikes.
For the event, the food court will have shish kabob, rotisserie chicken, hot dogs and half smoke sausage.

Army warrant officers
The Lord Fairfax Silver Chapter, US Army Warrant Officer Association has its monthly membership meeting May 21, at the Kingstowne Library, on the corner of Beulah and Telegraph roads. The meeting starts at 5 p.m.

Deployment and Family Readiness Classes
The Mobilization/ Deployment and Family Readiness Program conducts monthly classes as follows:
Monday, 10 a.m. to noon, Reintegration Workshop, preparing for return or adjusting as a family after the return, what to expect and resources to help, for Soldiers, DoD civilians and family members.
Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Family Readiness Group Advanced Class, FRG volunteers or unit commands needing more in-depth information on sustaining, and/or revitalizing an FRG.
June 4, 10:30 a.m. to noon, FRG roundtable, for all FRG leaders, unit commanders, first sergeants and FRG volunteers.
June 8 10 a.m. to noon, Pre-Deployment Class - Preparing for an upcoming deployment and learning about resources for Soldiers, DoD civilians and family members.
Classes are in the ACS Classroom, Bldg. 200, Belvoir Road.

Free EFMP Movie
Exceptional Family Member Program families can see the movie, "Escape to Witch Mountain," Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Wood Theater. The theater opens at 3 p.m.
The showing will have special sensory adjustments, 25 percent lower volume and 25 to 30 percent more lighting.
A kid-sized popcorn and drink are included for kids. The show is not open to the general public.

On the water
Want to learn how to sail in a social and fun environment? Outdoor Recreation has learn-to-sail with a with a group instructor in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Sail from 5:30 p.m. until sunset. The next event is Friday, from 3 to 10 p.m.
No sailing experience is necessary and each boat has one instructor onboard. People can participate and sail as much, or as little, as they want.
Boats can accommodate up to five guests and an instructor.
The cost of $42 per person includes sailing until sunset, onboard instruction and transportation.

Hiking group
Fort Belvoir Outdoor Recreation's Hiking Interest Group explore nearby hiking areas in northern Virginia and Maryland. The group's next hike is Saturday to one of the Loft Mountain area trails to a 28-, 42- or a 63-foot waterfall in Shenandoah National Park.

Day-tripping
MWR has a trip to Atlantic City, N.J., May 30.
The trip, open to all ages, depart the Community Center at 8 a.m. and return between 10:30 and 11 p.m. The cost is $45 per person, with an $18 to $25 rebate. Sign up at the center, Bldg. 1200, Taylor Road.

Wives' club luncheon
The Army Officers' Wives' Club of the Greater Washington Area hosts its final luncheon of the year May 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Fort Myer's Officers' Club's Koran Ballroom.
The group will reflect on the past year and install new AOWCGWA Executive Board members.
The Army Band's music ensemble group, Downrange, will provide entertainment.
The luncheon costs $20.

Fort Belvoir's Civilian Personnel Advisory Center and Planning Inc. present a FERS Pre-Retirement seminar May 27 to 29, for $264.
Topics include eligibility, benefits computation, survivor and disability benefits, supplemental benefits, FEHB/FEBLI, Social Security, Medicare; financial planning, including TSP; health and wellness, including nutrition, fitness and stress management; tax and estate planning; and life after retirement.

Army Birthday Ball
The Army Birthday Ball is June 13 in Washington, D.C. Registration is available through Army Knowledge Online, which also includes event location, times and additional information.
Tickets are $85 per person and 150 discount tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis for E1 through E6 and GS1 through GS7. Registration is only available through AKO. People with no AKO account will have to get sponsorship from someone who has one or attend as a guest of someone who attends.
Partial closure of 9th Street
One lane of 9th Street will be closed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. through May 29 to allow Dominion Virginia Power crews to install an electrical direct bank system, according to the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. Road signs and flagmen will warn motorists when work is occurring.
Bunco!
Anyone 18 and older is welcome to join the fun of the Army MWR promotion, "It's Bunco Time."
The dice game is easy to learn and play and beginners are welcome. Prizes include gift cards and prizes.
The next date at Belvoir is May 27, Entertainment Night.
Games begin at 5 p.m. at the Community Center and food and drinks will be available to buy.

Pianist wanted

A Mass of Anointing is Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Those who want to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick are welcome.
Fairfax Chapel is closed until further notice for renovations and repair. The 9:15 a.m. Hispanic and the 11:15 a.m. Masses will be in Barden Education Center Auditorium during renovations.
Jewish
Fort Belvoir Jewish Congregation's next Friday night service is at 7 p.m. May 22 at Belvoir Chapel.
The congregation celebrates Armed Forces Day Friday at 6:30 p.m., with a Deli Dinner at Belvoir Chapel. A service follows at 8 p.m., with Maj. Gen. Ronald Silverman, who returned from Iraq last year.
A Saturday Morning Service is May 23 at 9:30 a.m. at Belvoir Chapel, followed by a kids service at 10:30 a.m.
Shavuot Service is May 29 at 8 p.m., to celebrate Moses coming down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments. Dairy goodies follow the service.
An afternoon movie is at 1 p.m. May 31, when "Boy in the Striped Pajamas" plays at Belvoir Social Hall.
The congregation is looking for all Jewish Soldiers and families new to Belvoir.

Eastern Orthodox
The next Eastern Orthodox service is the Divine Liturgy for the Feast of Saints Constantine and Helen, May 21 at 9 a.m. in Woodlawn Chapel's Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
St. Constantine was the emperor who legalized Christianity in the Roman
Empire in AD 313 and transformed the ancient seaport of Byzantium into "Constantinople," the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. His mother, St. Helen, though the wife of a pagan Roman emperor, converted to Christianity and later discovered the True Cross of Christ in Jerusalem in AD 326.
Non-Orthodox are welcome at the event.

Park University
Park University offers undergraduate programs and associate degrees.
Summer classes begin May 26 for onsite and June 1 for internet courses.

ODU
The Military Career Transition Program's Master of Science in Education summer classes at Old Dominion University begin Monday. The second summer session begins June 19. Non-degree applications are being accepted now for summer and fall classes. Non-degree students become degree-seeking after beginning the program.
The Master of Science in Education is an initial licensure program that transfers to 44 states and DoD schools around the world. Licensure is offered in elementary, middle school and high school. Active/retired military, military spouses and qualified civilians are eligible for the program.
Personnel who transfer before completing the program locally can finish their program by taking online or video streamed courses.

UMUC
University of Maryland University College is registering for summer classes.
UMUC is in Barden Education Center, Rooms 126 and 128.

Central Michigan University
CMU Summer I classes begin Friday, and Summer II classes begin July 7. Classes are available at six locations in the D.C metro area, including Belvoir.
CMU accepts applications year round. Classes are conducted on alternating weekends or weekday evenings. New classes begin every six weeks. Degree completion is available in 18 months or less.

NOVA
Registration is underway for the summer session at Northern Virginia Community College, which begins Monday. Information is available by calling 703-323-3000 or from the Web site, nvcc.edu.

Courses in the session cover the same material and award the same credits as semester-long classes.
Students may enroll 24 hours a day at www.nvcc.edu or by calling 703-323-3770. In-person registration is available during normal office hours at NOVA's campuses in Alexandria, Annandale, Loudoun, Manassas, Springfield and Woodbridge.
The school also has independent, distance learning courses.
Webster University
Registration at Webster University is open for summer, with classes beginning June 1; and fall, which begins Aug. 15. The GRE/GMAT is not required for admissions.
Evening classes are conducted at Barden Education Center and additional programs are offered in the D.C. Metro area at Bolling and Andrews air force bases, and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
Webster University offers five, nine-week terms each year, with some transferable credits.
Office hours are Mondays to Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Fridays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
