After the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Woodlawn Road and Beulah Street were closed to public use through Fort Belvoir. In a cooperative effort, the Virginia Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Fairfax County and the U.S. Army will construct a replacement road that will extend and widen existing Old Mill Road, now named Mulligan Road, from Route 1 (Richmond Highway) to Telegraph Road through Fort Belvoir.
The new connection to Telegraph Road requires that it be widened to four lanes from Beulah Street to half a mile south of Hayfield Road, near the entrance to the Humphries Engineer Center.
Interested people can learn about the proposed design to widen existing Old Mill Road (now Mulligan Road) and Telegraph Road, including the realignment of the Route 235 (Mount Vernon Memorial Highway) intersection at Route 1.
A design public hearing is Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hayfield Secondary School cafeteria, 7630 Telegraph Road, Alexandria. A presentation begins at 6 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session.
People can see proposed project plans depicting the major design features at the public hearing or before the hearing at VDOT's Northern Virginia District office, 14685 Avion Parkway, Chantilly, Va., 20151-1104; or call 703-383-VDOT.
Property impacts, right of way policies, and tentative construction schedules are available at the meeting and from the Chantilly office.
