Lisa Pratt, an Army spouse from Fort Carson, Colo., won the 2009 Operation Rising Star singing contest, the FMWR Command announced Saturday.
Pratt garnered enough votes from the judges and the worldwide audience to beat runner-up, Capt. Donald Williamson, a chaplain with U.S. Army Garrison in Bamberg, Germany. Airman 1st Class Jamie Jarman, of Andrews Air Force Base, Md., earned enough points for third place.
Last year's winner, Joyce Dodson, was an Army spouse and former servicemember, from Bamberg, Germany.
Rising Star is an FMWRC-backed contest based on television's "American Idol." It is produced by the Army Entertainment Division and sponsored by the General Motors Military Discount program.
In the competition, a panel of 12 judges selected 12 semifinalists after viewing the videotapes of local winners from 35 installations and duty stations worldwide. The contestants performed a series of live performances that were open to the public and broadcast on the Pentagon Channel Nov. 16 through Saturday at Wallace Theater.
From those performances, the judges, whose scores made up 50 percent of each competitor's total, and online voters from a worldwide audience, whittled the semifinalists to three finalists and, finally, selected the overall winner.
