Teaching as a second career
Troops to Teachers has a seminar, "Teaching as a Second Career," May 12 at 12:30 p.m., in Room 144 of Barden Education Center, 9625 Belvoir Road.

Troops to Teachers pays up to $10,000 in stipends and bonuses for people in the program.

Troops to Teachers is an ideal program for servicemembers considering teaching as a second career. A representative from Old Dominion University will explain the program and answer any questions regarding ODU's Master of Science in Education with full teaching licensure.

It is available to active and retired military, spouses and qualified civilians. Teaching licensures are offered for elementary, middle and high school. Courses are conducted at Barden Center and online.

Free financial aid workshop
The Woodbridge Campus of Northern Virginia Community College has a free workshop to help students apply for college financial aid.

Participants will learn how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and get various forms of financial aid. Anyone interested in attending college is encouraged to attend. High school seniors, parents and guardians are welcome.

The event is May 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be provided and free parking is available in Lot B, student parking.

UMUC - NOVA
The University of Maryland University College has formed a new alliance with Northern Virginia Community College. Under the agreement, NOVA graduates will have the opportunity to seamlessly transfer their credits into one of UMUC bachelor's degree programs. Both schools are represented at Fort Belvoir.

UMUC offers transfer scholarships for NOVA students pursuing an associate's degree. The Dual Enrollment Scholarship allows NOVA students to be enrolled in both UMUC and NOVA and get $500 toward a UMUC course.

The UMUC Transfer Scholarship can be awarded to NOVA graduates, who can get $3,300 per year for full-time enrollment or $1,650 per year for part-time enrollment. The scholarship is renewable until bachelor's degree completion.

Upcoming UMUC classes include Systems Analysis & Design; Marketing Principles and Strategic Planning in Homeland Security.

University of Maryland University College
Registering for Spring 2010 term. Classes weeknights or weekends.

Classes at Belvoir, face-to-face, online and hybrid courses at a variety of civilian sites and military installations throughout the D.C. Metro Area.
