Fort Belvoir's own Earth Day was celebrated with a variety of events over this past week. Camping, hiking, clean-ups, canoe and kayak trips, a guided bird walk, raptor show, outdoor games and an open house at the Environmental Education Center acknowledged the 30th anniversary of Accotink Bay Refuge.
Surrounded by Warrior Transition Unit Soldiers, Col. Mark Moffatt, deputy commander of installation transformation and BRAC, dedicated the T-17 Gunston Cove Loop Trail and fishing pier. The act permanently sets aside land, protects it from development and keeps the trail as an open space and respite for Soldiers and their families.
In its 40th year, Earth Day was a grassroots educational event started by Wisconsin Sen. Bill Proxmire. Now, it has grown into an internationally recognized and celebrated occasion with events held to promote environmental awareness.
