Tuesday was a night solely for Belvoir families. It was also a night to keep the wallets and purses at home.

Courtesy of The Villages at Belvoir and Wood Theater, residents were treated to a free screening of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief." Making the occasion even more jubilant for kids was the chance to delve into as much free popcorn, candy and hot dogs they could get their hands on.

Jennifer Watkins, marketing director for The Villages at Belvoir, said it handed out all 400 tickets - maximum capacity of the theater - to residents throughout the installation's 15 villages. With April being Month of the Military Child, she said the night was all about having fun.

"We want families to enjoy a night on us. We're picking up the tab," Watkins said. "This is our first time doing this and the response has been great. We can't thank Wood Theater and its manager, Jim McKane, enough for their help. They've been great in pulling this off."

Anticipating a full house, McKane ran out and picked up more hot dogs for everyone shortly after the doors opened at 5 p.m. Cynthia Watross came to the theater along with her 6-year old daughter, Jessica, who was enjoying some popcorn and soda in preparation for the movie.

"It's great that there are some things in life that are still free," Watross said. "It's nice that they're doing this for families. I think it's wonderful."

9-year old Derek Lemke attended the screening with his mother, Trina, and sister, Michelle. Like everyone else, he had no problem with attending a free movie.

"It's free. You can't beat that," he said. "I like watching movies and I haven't seen this one yet. I think it's going to be good."
