Two Alexandria museums, Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, offer free tours on Mother's Day for all visiting mothers! Tours are available in the Old Town Alexandria historic sites from 1 to 5 p.m. May 9.
At Gadsby's Tavern Museum, Mom can tour the historic tavern and City Hotel made famous by John Gadsby. Notable visitors, in addition to mothers, have been George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.
The day is also a special Family Tour Day at Gadsby's Tavern Museum, so children can learn about history from other kids. Junior docents, volunteers from grades 3 through 6, will be stationed at each tour stop, including the taproom, bedchambers, ballroom, assembly room and dining room. Families can tour at their own pace.
At the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, mothers can see the collection of medicinal herbs and botanicals, shop furnishings, apothecary bottles and equipment, many still in their original location.
Mothers can tour both museums for free. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children, ages 5 to 12.
Gadsby's Tavern Museum is at 134 North Royal St.; and the apothecary museum is at 105-107 South Fairfax St.
