Summer vacation is almost over and it's time to hit the books again. Parents and caregivers should ensure they and the children know the do's and don'ts of back-to-school safety.
With school almost back in session, Fort Belvoir's Installation Safety Office reminds everyone at Belvoir to be aware of traffic laws. Motorists must stop for school buses when the bus driver has activated the hazard lights and extended the stop sign. Watch for children as they travel to and from bus stops.
Riding the bus
Remember these safety tips:
• Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.
• Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter.
• When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk 10 giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus.
• Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.
• Be aware of street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!
Personal safety for children
Adults should consider the following:
• Make sure you know the phone number and complete address of your child's school, as well as the principal's name and number.
* Tell your child to stay seated at all times on the school bus and to cross the street at least 10 feet in front of the bus when they get off.
• Make after-school schedules and carpooling arrangements early and always have a back-up plan. Kids shouldn't walk home from school alone.
• Get all the proper safety equipment, including helmets, kneepads, reflectors, etc., for kids who ride their bikes or skateboard to school.
• Don't buy your child clothing or bags with their name on them, since strangers can use this information against them.
• Remind your kids to always wait for their ride in a safe spot. This is a great time to take a friend. Teamwork is a good idea every time.
• If someone calls them from a car, tell them to keep their distance and keep away. Remind them not to stop for anyone they don't know on the way to school or at the bus stop.
• Make sure you know how they're getting home, and never allow them to head out with somebody you don't know.
• Buying your child a cell phone is a great idea in case of an emergency.
• Ensure your children have a current physical exam and vaccination update.
