Belvoir’s youth gets studio-quality instruction

»  Comments | Post a Comment

In the Fort Belvoir Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration, & Skills Unlimited dance classes, education and technique are tied into fun.

"With my teaching style, they learn all the fundamentals while incorporating fun things for them to do," said Angie Chapman, the SKIES Unlimited dance instructor of all 12 ongoing classes.

Chapman, who has 14 years of experience instructing dance, explained that, in her programs, children learn all the things offered at any off-post studio. From barre work, including plies, tendus, frappes, ronds de jambe, grands battements, dégagés, to first, second, and third position, the SKIES dance program mission is to reinforce the basics to continue education.

"For the year, there’s a set goal," said Chapman, explaining that once a student completes a course, they’ve achieved a certain level of experience and knowledge so they may move up to the next level. "We also incorporate a free dance, for (students) to express themselves. I think it’s a big part of learning how to dance, too – free expression."

SKIES Unlimited dance classes run through May 19, with classes Monday through Thursday and Saturday. For more information visit www.belvoirmwr.com/Facilities/CYS.
