The Fort Belvoir Little League season kicked off its 2008 season Saturday morning on the Minor Division Field.
The two Belvoir Major Division teams, the Braves and Yankees, tangled for its traditional season start.
In the first inning, the Braves and Yankees scored two runs in their respective halves. In the second and third innings both were three up, three down and remained tied through the third. The Yankees brought four runs across the plate in the fourth, powered by James Jones' second hit of the game as he smashed a double to take the lead over the Braves, 6-2.
The Braves didn't stand for it. During their half of the fourth, five runs were scored as Bryan Blackmon and Hutson Oxendine each singled with men on to take the lead 7-6.
The Yankees, in the top of the fifth, scored again as Nathan Sweet singled and moved around the bases, ultimately scoring on a passed ball. Again tied, now at seven, the Braves returned with four more runs as Blackmon again singled with two on and William Parker's second hit doubled, scoring Blackmon and Cameron Miller. The Yankees, in their fifth and sixth innings, scored once each time but it wasn't enough as the Braves took the season opener, 11-8.
In Junior Division action, the Belvoir Nationals went against the Alexandria Potomac Nationals for what was mostly a pitcher's duel.
Belvoir held Alexandria Potomac to four hits while acquiring only two hits of their own from Edgar Pabon and Robbie Bosko.
The Junior Division game ended prematurely as a downpour of rain washed out the field at the end of the fifth. Belvoir appeared to be mounting a comeback, but after five innings
the game was official and Alexandria Potomac was on top, 10-5.
