NGA put up two strong late-game innings to seal a huge margin of victory over PEO, 23-6, at North Post Field Monday.
NGA wasted no time establishing its offensive power. At the top of the first inning, NGA put up a quick double. After a strikeout, a single put runners at first and third base. PEO managed to net a second out at second base, but an NGA runner still crossed the plate for a 1-0 lead.
Despite needing only one out to switch sides, NGA hammered back-to-back home runs brought in four more runs before a center field pop fly ended the inning.
PEO's first batter took a base on balls after some NGA pitches that sailed beyond the strike zone. The next batter brought in a single that skirted through a fielder's legs. NGA stepped up its outfield presence, quickly tallying its three outs, but not before a single runner made it home for a score of 5-1.
At the top of the second, NGA blasted a triple to score two runs, then a double scored another before the inning's end, pushing the team's advantage to 8-1.
PEO brought in no runs in the second and third innings, while NGA struggled with a scoreless third as well. Still, NGA made up for its drought at the top of the fourth, regrouping with a double to start the inning and bringing six runners home for a 14-1 lead.
Faced with an ever-growing deficit, PEO looked to dig its way out of the hole at the bottom of the fourth. After the first batter took a base on balls, a home run deep into left field brought both runners home for the only runs of the inning.
NGA continued powering shots into the outfield in the fifth, as a home run brought in three of the team's nine runs for a 23-3 lead.
PEO, still determined, put up another three runs with a single out on the board, but a double play at second and third base doomed any chance of a comeback.
NGA improved to 12-7 on the season, while PEO fell to 5-14 with the loss. The intramural championships begin Aug. 23.
