Contrary to popular belief, bad things don't always happen in threes. Just ask HRC.
Human Resources Command hoisted the Commander's Cup trophy over its head for the third time in as many years Tuesday during a presentation ceremony at the Community Center.
Intramural sports coordinator Geneva Martin identified each of the 15 sports she regulates - from flag football to golf - and pointed out that HRC's presence was always known.
"I like them because they participate in every sport I have," Martin said.
Martin then introduced Installation Commander Jerry Blixt and Command Sgt. Maj. Gabriel Berhane to make remarks - the first of which included a thank you to Martin for her hard work and garnered a flurry of applause from the audience.
Blixt acknowledged HRC as a great partner to Belvoir and the organization's three-peat as a great accomplishment before stating, "You might need a truck to haul all this hardware."
Indeed, HRC not only had its overall trophy to lug out to its van, but several individual honors as well.
Berhane added that the garrison was grateful for everyone's encouragement of Belvoir's programs. "We appreciate your support and participation, not just in sports, but in all you do. It is always an honor and a privilege to recognize our great organizations here at Belvoir."
HRC Brig. Gen. William Waff accepted the award on behalf of the organization and thanked HRC Wellness Program Specialist Debbie Sanders for her work. "Debbie has been wonderful about getting out the message and keeping us informed out there at 'Fort Hoffman'," he joked, referencing the unofficial nickname given to the agency's Alexandria location. "We have to commute from Alexandria to participate, so this really speaks to the dedication we have to the program."
HRC moves to Fort Knox, Ky., next year as part of Base Realignment and Closure, but Waff said the agency still hopes to compete until "every last person moves in 2011. In the meantime," he added with a laugh, "we'll do our best to keep all our best athletes with us."
After the ceremony, Sanders expressed her happiness at HRC's third consecutive Commander's Cup victory.
"This is just such a source of pride for us," she said. "We're a bit of an older unit, and we have to come here from Alexandria to be a part of this. It's an extra effort for us, but it just speaks to the work we put in to be here. This award shows that it has really paid off."
