Sonic Boom track registration
Registration for the Sonic Boom Track Club is open for boys and girls ages 5 to 18 at Child and Youth Services. Call 703-805-9139 or 703-805-1257.
Practice begins Mar. 29 at Pullen Field from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Coaches and volunteers are also needed.

Outdoor Recreation classes
The Virginia State Hunter Education Course is available online Mar. 21 from noon to 5 p.m. Students should bring the certificate of completion to Outdoor Recreation. Course limited to 30 students, and all students must be 15 years of age or older. An in-class session and two additional online sessions are available in the fall.
The Belvoir International Bowhunters Education Program classes begin Mar. 20 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional classes are available from July to November.
Beginning archery classes are 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays with registration at 5:30 p.m. Class includes certified instructors, equipment, safety class and basic archery lesson.
Active duty military cost is $7 per student and $5 for each additional family member; all other categories are $10 per student and $8 per additional family member.

Spring into Spring races
The Spring into Spring 5 mile and 5k runs are at 8 a.m. Apr. 18 at Pullen Field.
Registration is $15 in advance, $20 after Apr. 1. Registration closes Apr. 12 and no same-day sign-ups are available.
Each entrant receives a commemorative T-shirt. Fifty runners required, and race open to 300 runners.

Belvoir tennis program
USTA NOVA Military Adult Tennis league runs through May and consists of three doubles matches each session. Each player only needs to play two matches to be on the team. Men's and women's teams play from April to June and play three doubles and two singles matches per session. One team from each league advances to districts in June and July and requires a team captain.
Children ages 2 to 18 can play in the junior tennis league. Ages 9 and under play Quick Start tennis with shorter nets, low compression balls and a different scoring system. Ages 10 and up play on a larger court with regular balls and scoring.

All-Army chess championships
Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall hosts the All-Army Chess Championships May 15 to 21.
Players must be active duty and a United States Chess Federation-rated member. Twelve players will be selected to represent the Army at the 2010 championships.
Application deadline is Apr. 2.

Boater education
Flotilla 25-8 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers a boating education course from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 10 at the Mount Vernon Yacht Club, 4817 Tarpon Lane in Alexandria.
D.C., Maryland and Virginia impose fines against boat operators who have no evidence of taking a boating safety class are welcome. The course meets the boating education requirements for all states.
Students receive a manual, certificate and card showing class completion.
Cost is $40 per student, or $60 if two people share a manual.

Little League and girls' softball
Little League registration continues to register players until teams become full.
Tryouts begin Saturday at Specker Field House for players ages 9 to 16, who should be registered prior to tryouts. Players ages 13 and up will be contacted for tryouts if enough players register to form two or more teams.
All teams must be formed by Mar. 19 to conduct practices before opening day on Apr. 10.
Families living on post should include village of residence to help place Machine Pitch and Tee-Ball division players on the same team by neighborhood when possible.
Team managers are needed for the Tee Ball and Machine Pitch divisions. Manager's first child plays free.
Volunteer umpires are also needed for 9-to-16-year-old divisions.
Registrants must be military dependents of active or retired servicemembers. Parents must bring sports physical and proof of age or registration will not be accepted.
Players are not required to attend registration.
Parents must complete the blue team assignment card for each player and obtain a program packet with general league information, tryout and practice schedules. Packet information may also be viewed at belvoirmwr.com.
Those interested in girls' softball should contact Rashawd Pope at 703-805-1257. Teams will be formed to play in the Mount Vernon league.

Veterans Golf Classic
The Burke division of Veterans of Foreign Wars hosts the Veterans Golf Classic May 21 at the Medal of Honor Golf Course at Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Tee time is at 1 p.m. and buffet dinner follows at 5 p.m. The tournament play format is Captain's choice, best ball, scramble start.
Special guest is Col. (Ret.) Barney Barnum, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and Medal of Honor Society past president.
Sponsorships are available. Registration ends March 15.

Ski and snowboarding trip
Outdoor Recreation hosts a trip to Pennsylvania's Liberty Mountain Resort Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Travelers must arrive at Outdoor Recreation at 5:30 a.m. to load the bus.
The center also has ski and snowboarding rental equipment, including snowsuits, which will be loaded on the bus prior to the trip. Lift tickets can be purchased at the front desk at a reduced cost. Transportation is $10 per person.

South County baseball registration
South County Hawks 2010 baseball season registration for boys and girls age 5 to 12 is open. This parent-friendly developmental approach to baseball provides confidence in players as they grow within their athletic abilities and further their skills.
The season consists of Little Hawks (ages 5 to 8), the Hawks Team (ages 9 to 12) and the Outlaws Select Travel Team (ages 9 to 12).
Practice and games begin in late March at Mason Neck Field in Lorton.
