The Virginia Bowhunters Association held a statewide indoor competition last weekend, where 193 archers completed at four locations.
The Fort Belvoir Archery Center was one of the four locations where the competition took place. Belvoir saw nine new state champions: Valerie Hawse, Jennifer Stoner, Lucy Bednarski, Zachary Stoner, Jerry Wenzel, Russ Hatchl, Christina Forbes, William Byers, and Logan Weller.
First place in their class were Linda Tate, Col. Kurt Marisa, Adam Hatchl and Kevin O'Shea. Kevin Brown, Vic Mathews, Adam Bradford and Brecken McDermott were second place in their class.
Each of these competitors shot a total of 120 arrows over two 3-hour periods for a maximum possible score of 600 points. Ties are broken by the number of arrows that directly impact the center of the target called "X"s.
There were 19 competitors with 600 points statewide, and only one with 120 "X"s - a perfect score.
The Belvoir Bowhunters hold their next indoor pin shoot at 9 a.m. March 13. Additionally, archery classes are held at 6 p.m. each Monday.
Editor's note: Atchison is president of the Belvoir Bowhunters.
